Camping, Hiking, Mountaineering and Outdoor Adventures

Camping, hiking, mountaineering and outdoor adventures

Active outdoor pursuits are a great way to keep fit, have fun and learn about the world around us.

Whether you’re camping for a few days on a campsite, or embarking on an expedition to a remote location, it’s important to be well prepared. Weather conditions can change rapidly. It’s always a good idea to have a few essentials with you in case of emergencies. These essentials may include some food and water, spare clothing, matches or a lighter, a mobile phone, perhaps a GPS, and maybe a knife or multi-tool. All of these essentials should be kept dry and safe, ideally in an easily re-sealable container.

Mylar bags are ideal for keeping your essential kit dry and safe from predators and the damaging effects of oxygen. One often overlooked use of Mylar bags in a camping situation is to keep your food smell-proof. Keeping the smell of food inside a Mylar bag is a great way to avoid attracting unwanted wildlife such as bears.

At Mylar Shop, we sell zip-seal Mylar bags, as well as the conventional heat-seal bags.

Our zip-lock bags range in size from 9cm x 10cm, through 10cm x 15cm12cm x 20cm20cm x 25cm, right up to 25cm x 40cm.

The 9cm x 10cm zip-lock bag is the perfect size for small emergency items, such as matches, a lighter, or a small knife.

The 10cm x 15cm and 12cm x 20cm zip-lock bags are great for slightly larger items like mobile/cellular phones, GPS navigation equipment, batteries and small snacks.

The 20cm x 25cm zip-lock bag is ideal for storing and transporting first-aid kits, toilet paper and sanitary wipes, sun-cream, insect repellent, cutlery and tin/bottle openers.

The 25cm x 40cm zip-lock bag can be used to keep larger foodstuffs safe and dry, as well as clothing, cooking utensils, and even small sleeping bags and camping equipment.

Zip-lock Mylar bags are easily sealed and resealed without the need for heat-sealing. This makes them are easier to use on trips away. They can also be heat-sealed for longer term storage. Mylar bags, particularly zip-lock re-sealable bags, are ideal for this purpose. They create a dry, safe, lightproof internal environment in which to keep all kinds of useful objects, from your favourite teabags or instant coffee, to your sleeping bag or torch/flashlight. Keeping your essentials in Mylar bags could mean you have a nice, dry, warm sleeping bag in which to rest after a hard days’ hiking or mountaineering, or it could mean you have access to dry matches or a functional GPS or mobile phone, all of which could potentially save your life in a genuine emergency.

Mylar bags are also ideal for preparing your own MRE (Meal, Ready-to-Eat). Ready prepared MRE meals are usually packaged in Mylar, but are difficult to purchase in many parts of the world. In countries where you can buy them readily, they are often very expensive, and do not conform to everyone’s idea of a tasty and nutritious meal, especially if you have specific dietary requirements such as vegetarianism, veganism or food allergies, or are your diet is restricted due to religious convictions.

Mylar Shop bags are a great addition to your outdoor kit. They’re so light and easy to add to your pack that you won’t even notice they’re there, until you need them, at which point they become indispensable.
